How long exactly is a kilometre?

Our first attempts to draw a kilometre route needed improving. This time we used a bigger plan, and we used thread to mark our route. First of all we had to make the thread so that it would be 1 kilometre on the map. Most of us used the running track on the map, which is 100 metres long to work this out. Then we stuck the thread down to mark our routes.
It was a sticky job, and a bit fiddly, but we all managed. When they were finished, they looked like this one by Tibo:
We voted to try out Killian's route:
Here's Killian's walk on Google Maps:

It was almost exactly right - 1.01 km.

We entered the other walks into Google Maps by hand:

Thanks to Joe Schwartz whose lesson inspired this one.
