Galileo's Journal

Today we read the book Galileo's Journal 1609-1610. It was all about the time when Galileo first pointed his telescope at the night sky.

We learnt about how he saw that Jupiter had moons that go round it!

Fibonacci's Money Question

We thought that Fibonacci's discovery of Hindu-Arabic numerals with Zero changed life for people in Europe. Buying and selling things became easier. Merchants like Fibonacci could do their maths easier... and make more money.

We looked at some of the pictures from his book:

Then we looked at one of the questions from his book (changed slightly):

So, three men got together as a company (a team). They all put some money together. They did some buying and selling, and because they bought things for less money and sold them for more, they ended up with more money.

They had put 50 pounds in at the start. But at the end, they had 100 pounds.

This was the question: How should they share that 100 pounds?

About a third of us thought the money should be shared equally. About a third thought some should get more than others. And about a third were not sure, or thought it was more complicated than that.

There were great arguments from each group. Lots of people changed their mind too.

At the end we asked, if they did get different amounts, what amount should they get? Kirill said that as they had ended up with double of what they started with, they should all get double what they put in.

Queen Victoria

Hello  my  name  is  Queen   Victoria  and I  was  the  Queen  of  the  United  Kingdom  of  Great  Britain  and  Ireland  for  63 years from  20 June 1837 until  my  death.

I  was  born  on 24 May,1819. I  was the  granddaughter of George 3, and my father Edward was fourth in line to the throne.  

Stephen the Great

Stephen the Great was a prince.

He became a prince when he was born in 1457.   He was born  in Moldavia.

The coins and the banknotes had his face on them.

He won 46 out of 48 battles at Vaslui.

He died in 1504.

Jean Louis Etienne

Jean Louis Etienne is an explorer and doctor from France.

He went to the North Pole to explore global warming to see how fast the ice was melting because the earth was getting hotter.

It is important to research the effects of global warming because it hurts animals that live in the North Pole like walruses, polar bears, orcas and sea otters.

An interesting fact about him is that he went alone to the North Pole.
Huskies pulled his sled for 63 days.

Marie Curie

Marie Sklowdowska is now known as Marie Curie.

She was born on 7 November 1867 in Poland.

She discovered two radioactive elements; Radium and Polonium.

Radium is used for medical treatments.

She also saved many people in World War1 by discovering “X rays”.

She won two Nobel prizes.

She was the first woman professor in Paris.

Where did Marie Curie grow up?

Marie grew up in Warsaw Poland. Her birth name was Maria Salomea Sklodowska, though her family called her Manya. Both of her parents were teachers. She had two sisters and one brother, but she was the youngest of them all. Marie was a very good student.

Tough times:

Her family came upon tough times. Marie’s father lost his job because he was in favour of Polish rules. And her sister Zofia got sick and died. Two years later her mother got ill and died as well. It was becoming very difficult for young Marie.

Her school in France:

Marie wanted to go to a university in Poland but women were not allowed to go. One day Marie discovered a university in France where women were allowed to go! Six years later, she proposed a deal with her sister “If I pay you money to go to a university in France, when you finish you pay me so I can go to the university.” So that’s what they did. In the university Marie married Pierre Curie so Marie’s name changed into Marie Curie.

New elements:

Marie and Pierre investigated the pitchblende and X-rays. They eventually discovered two new elements in the pitchblende! She named one of them  Polonium and the other Radium.

Nobel prize:

The Nobel Prize was awarded to Marie Curie, Pierre Curie and Henri Becquerel in 1903 for their work in radiation. In 1911 Marie won another Nobel Prize! Marie was the first women to win a Nobel Prize.

She died in 1934.

ATHENA: GODDESS OF WAR

HER   symbols  are  the  olive  branch  and  her  bird  is  an owl.  Also  she is a  symbol  of  wisdom  and she  is  the  patron  saint of   Athens. 

Her dad was Zeus the  King of  the Olympian Gods. Athena did not want war!

She died because people wanted to kill her dad, who she loved so much.

Facts about Ronaldo

Ronaldo is a portugese footballer who plays for Real Madrid.  He was born in 1985. His birthday is on February 5th.

He separated from his wife Lrina Shayk, they had 1 boy together.

He won the Golden Ball Cup in 2013-2014 and he won the champions League in 2014 (Vs Atletico de Madrid 4/1) Ronaldo scored the last goal as a penalty. They were given a very shiny golden cup. 

His birth name is Cristiano Ronaldo Dos Santos Aveiro.  His mother was called Maria Dolores Dos Santos Aveiro and his father was called Jose dos Dinis Aveiro.

Napoleon

He was born in Corsica, a French island on the 15 ^th of August  1769.

At age 9 his parents sent him to military school in France.

At the age 16 and only 1m 57cm (he was short for that age).

He became a artillery lieutenant. He studied strategy and joined the winning side.

 He was promoted to Captain, commander then to General.
 By the age 26 he commanded the entire French army.

Napoleon crowned himself Emperor in 1804, during this time he started up banks in France.
He invaded nearly every country in Europe and started dozens of wars that cost millions of lives. But in one battle, in Waterloo, Belgium, he failed against the English, led by the Duke of Wellington the Dutch and the Prussians.
He was captured by the English and was brought to the small island of St Helens in the Atlantic Ocean. He died there 7 years later age 52.

A small man who changed everything to France!

Christopher Columbus

Christopher was an Italian explorer. He was born in 1451 and died in 1506.  He sailed for King Ferdinand the second and Queen Isabella of Spain.  He was asked to take his three ships to explore the world.  Their names were:

Neil Alden Armstrong

Hello, I am Neil Armstrong. I was born on August 5,1930  in Wapakoneta, Ohio, America. I was the first man to reach the moon. I was also an aerospace engineer, naval aviator, test pilot and University Professor. Before becoming an astronaut I was an officer in the U.S navy and served in the Korean war. After the war, I earned my bachelor’s degree at Purdue.  I died on August 25, 2012 in Sinsinaty, Ohio, America. I stayed 8 days,14 hours,12 minutes and 30 seconds on the moon.                                 

Joseph Merlin

Joseph Merlin was born in 1760. He died in 1803 in London.
He was a weird man because he crashed into a mirror!! 
He went to a party in Carlisle House and he skated on one wheel so he crashed!  However, he had invented the rollerskate!

Leonardo is one of the greatest inventors and artists of all time. I sure you herd of his Mona Lisa, this is surely is the most famous picture. He sketched first armored  car, first helicopter, first repeating rifle, and the first parachute! (He lived 1452-1519)!!! He considered by many as father of modern science! But that is really sad that he didn’t marry or have children.

His full name is Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, and his parents full names are Piero Fruosino di Antonio da Vinci, and  Caterina da Vinci.

Isabella was born in the small village of Avilla.
She gave money to Christopher Columbus to discover new land, that new land  today is called America.
She died in Medina del campo.

Julius Caesar

Julius Caesar was born 100 BC and died at 47 BC. He invaded lots of parts of Europe, like Spain. Julius Caesar wanted to invade la Gaulle. Julius Caesar's army came in a troop using la tortue. La tortue is a way of fighting. Julius Caesar lost the first battle against la Gaulle because there was a brave warrior called Vercingetorix. But Julius Caesar won the battle of Alexia and put Vercingetorix in prison. Julius Caesar conquered la Gaulle.
