Growing patterns with matchsticks and with cubes

In 4G today we chose growing patterns to build. We labelled each step number, and then made graphs of our patterns.
Migeul and Evangelos chose a growing pattern of cubes

Growing patterns with cubes and pattern blocks

We've been making growing patterns. First with multilink cubes:
We all plotted the graphs of our growing patterns on paper. We also looked at a couple of them on Desmos. We looked at Rhea and Maryam's pattern very carefully, and added a line onto the points.
We had a good look at how that pattern works. Mr Gregg asked "What do you do to get from x to y? Killian said, "Times by 2, then take away 1." We tried it out, and it works. Then we tried out the rule for other values of x:

As a follow up, we made growing patterns with pattern blocks. Can you see how these patterns work?

Growing Patterns

We've been making "growing patterns" in Year 4.

Here are some of the patterns that we've created.
We wrote labels to show the step numbers ("Just write N if you don't won't to write 'Number' every time.")

Here are a few of us explaining our pattern:





We're working out what the Cuisenaire rods in each step would add up to.


Some of us graphed our numbers on Desmos.
