Ambroise Pare (by Noah)

Ambroise Pare

Ambroise Pare was born in 1510.He was very significant because he discovered that you should not put boiling oil to give to people who needed. Ambroise Pare thought that it did not cure them so he had an idea. His idea was to make a special mixture and it was made of egg yolk, oil of roses and turpentine, and left overnight. Pare was a keen observer and did not allow the beliefs of the day to supersede the evidence at hand. He published his first book the method of curing wounds caused by harquebus and firearms in 1545. He died in 1590 20 December age 80 1590. There is a hospital named after him.
The one that I was born!

A Lucky Strike

Antibiotics are drugs that kill dangerous bacteria in our bodies that make us sick. In 1928, Alexander Fleming discovered the first antibiotic, penicillin, which he grew in his laboratory. Without antibiotics, many infections could be deadly.

Alexander Fleming Inspecting a Bacteria Culture
The biologist Alexander Fleming was researching a bacteria called staphylococci. Returning from holiday one time in 1928, he saw that one of the glass culture dishes he had accidentally left out had been contaminated by a fungus, and noticed that the bacteria did not grow in the area surrounding the fungus.
Bacteria Staying Away From The Penicillium Colony
Years later, after further research by other scientists, penicillin was able to be produced on an industrial scale, changing the way doctors treated bacterial infections forever.

Penicillin antibiotics are historically significant because they are the first drugs that were effective against many previously deadly diseases such as Staphylococcus infections.

The greatest sleep over

Saturday we went to Pablo's sleepover at his house. Then when all friends went exept me and Pablo we did a huge house of Minecraft we called it Best friend's house. For the moment it is for the children of Pablo's sleepover.  We were a bit bored with the ipad so we started and finished the lego ninja.
This is how it looks like.
If you want a house say it in the comment.

Yellapragada Subbarow

I am going to share about a great Indian scientist of the 20th century perhaps not just India but the entire world.

We all know that even today cancer is one of the most feared diseases of the world and till today
scientists and doctors are working to completely cure it. It is interesting to know that significant work
in this field was done by a scientist

Yellapragada Subbarow led one of the most important researches in America during world war two

He discovered the role of phosphocreatine and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) as an energy source in the cell. This lead to the foundation of biochemistry and all the further discoveries in this field are directly or indirectly influenced by this.

He developed methotrexate for the treatment of cancer. This, without a doubt, is the single most important drug for the treatment of innumerable cancers. He has saved literally millions of life through this drug.

He was one of the best minds India has ever produced.

Homework

Next term we’ll be beginning a topic on “discoveries”.

People have learnt a lot since prehistory.

Who do you think are some of the significant discoverers?

What do you think are some of the important discoveries that have changed our thinking and our lives?

Look at the slides. Who do you think might be important?

Who else do you think could be included?

Write what you think as a comment below.

Chants to bring animals to life

Continuing to explore the book Mouse, Bird, Snake, Wolf, we wrote chants, or incantations to bring our animals to life.
Listen to them:

Here are the words written out:

The author, David Almond, has seen our work, and likes it:

Klee-inspired prints

We looked at Klee paintings for our 100 word stories and were inspired to do some Art work of our own.

Klee often used geometric forms as well as letters, numbers, and arrows in his abstract paintings.

Using the letters of our names we made abstract 'Klee Style' prints.
We etched our designs onto printing foam, then carefully rolled special block printing paint onto our foam etchings to produce these beautiful pieces of work:

Some photos of making them:

Here are some of them, up on the wall:

Should they make a wolf?

In the book Mouse, Bird, Snake, Wolf, the children decide to make a wolf. We discussed whether this was a good idea, and thought of reasons for and against.

Then we made a "conscience alley" to give Harry and Sue our advice:

My Trip to Switzerland and around

On 27-Nov we went to Switzerland, I was really excited about this trip. It was a road trip, bit longer...it took us 6-7 hours to reach.

Next day we visited Lausanne. Lausanne is located on the shores of the lake Geneva, the view of lake and the mountains is really nice. I have visited the Olympic museum; it is an interesting place to be.

Then we went to Montreux, it is famous for Christmas market. It was beautifully decorated with lights and many characters lightning. Adults were drinking hot wine and we enjoyed pop-corns, crepes and churros.

The day after we went to Chamonix. It was the first time I saw snowfall. We went for a walk in the snow filled city. We saw a glacier. We played there for some time, made snow man and threw snowballs on each other. I also made an snow trophy.

While returning from Chamonix we have visited Geneva city; there we have seen the lake and fountain known as jet d'eau.

Next day while coming back we went to Annecy. We saw the 3rd largest lake in France and it is the cleanest lake in Europe. Annecy is a beautiful city with canals and bridges. When we were near one of the bridge I noticed a swan just next to me, it was so near that I can touch it. It was a amazing experience.

I enjoyed the trip and want more trips like this.

Creating Animals

Just like in the book Mouse, Bird, Snake, Wolf, we've been busy creating these same animals out of clay and natural materials that we've collected.

Multiplication Stars

We've been looking at how different times tables produce different stars. First we started exploring this on paper. The idea is that you can have different sizes of jumps. For the multiples of two you can have jumps of size two, and so on:
We noticed that some of the numbers gave the same pattern.
Then we tried it using GeoGebra:

Here are all the stars we created (and coloured in Paint):
We noticed all kinds of things, and shared these together.
Here are some written examples from our maths journals:

Creatures in our minds

In Mouse, Bird, Snake, Wolf by David Almond and Dave McKean, the children fill holes in their world by inventing, creating new animals.

We had a think in our heads about the types of animals we would create.

Here they all are:

More snowflakes

These snowflakes are created with make-a-flake, and coloured in with MS Paint.

Dots everywhere

Mr Box was in his twisty twirly house when Small Mr Box arrived and started sticking dots everywhere. Mr Box asked, in a puzzled voice, "Why are you sticking dots all over the place?"
"Because Badger has committed a robbery," said Small Mr Box, "and if you stick dots everywhere he won't come because he does not like them."
So Mr Box allowed him to stick them up.
That night, Badger tried to steal something from Mr Box's house. But the dots scared him away and he ran straight into Small Mr Box who was guarding the park and got quite a shock when Badger ran into him!
